Compounding Services

Pharmaceutical compounding is the process of customisation of a medication to suit a particular need. As the role of pharmacy compounders continues to grow and expand, a greater depth of knowledge is required to prepare extemporaneous compounded medications. These compounded medications contain active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) which provide the benefit desired and also may contain non medicinal ingredients which are included in the formulation to produce the desired pharmaceutical qualities pertaining to form, stability, appearance, taste, etc

As compounding pharmacists we strive to always be quality driven. We endeavour to provide a final preparation ensuring appropriate levels of safety, quality, integrity and that successful positive therapeutic outcomes are achieved for the patient. Patient compliance through dosage form selection, formulation enhancement and dosing interval improvements are a few reasons for choosing a compounded preparation.

However, it is also important to recognise some the other formal reasons, rationale and requirements for choosing a compounded medication. These include:

  • No commercial availability as it applies to dosage form, strength, route of delivery and delivery system

  • The ability to compensate for potential allergic reactions to commonly used excipients as in the case of preservatives, colours, etc

  • The available documentation and studies currently available regarding specific compounded medication
